People promise to exercise more, smoke less and lose weight. They make New Year’s resolutions and promises to their friends and spouses. Yet, they mostly fail to meet their goals.
This project proposes an economic structure around commitment devices: tools that help us articulate and enable our goals.
It leverages the programmable nature of crypto-currencies to create self-enforced commitment contracts. Participants pledge money to accomplish a task by a certain date. The user’s performance is measured by a wearable device like a Nike FuelBand or Apple Watch. If the participant fails, their money automatically gets re-distributed by the network to winners. Users can also bet on a goal’s outcome, and hire a coach to assist them on their journey.
This was my final project at CIID.
